Mission # M-144

     1.  MISSION:  Daylight bombardment mission to attack ammunition dumps and gun positions, E side of TAROA; gun positions and buildings, S tip of TAROA; gun positions and installations, NW tip of TAROA; and radio station and buildings, lagoon side of TAROA, by 12 B-25 A/Ps from 396th Bombardment Squadron (M), 41st Bombardment Group (M), in 4 flights of 3 A/Ps.

     2.  TARGETS ATTACKED:  1st flt over target (ammunition dumps and gun positions, E side of TAROA) at 082147Z from 10,500 ft; 2nd lft over target (gun positions and buildings, S tip of TAROA at 082212Z from 10,300 ft; 3rd lft over target (gun positions and installations, NW tip TAROA) at 082320Z from 11,300 ft; 4th flt over target (radio station and buildings, lagoon side of TAROA) at 090113Z, from 9,000 ft.

     3.  TAKE OFF:  12 B-25 A/P took off from MULLINIX FIELD as follows:

                    1st flt from 081921Z to 081923Z.
                    2nd flt from 081846Z to 081948Z.
                    3rd flt from 082045Z to 082047Z.
                    4th flt from 082242Z to 082244Z.

     5.  ABORTIVE:  None.

     6.  BOMB LOAD:  All A/Ps carried 4 x 500 lb GP bombs with .025 sec tail fuses, A/Ps 909, 913, 971, 834, 910, 934 and 140 carried 5 x 75mm HE shells and A/P 182 carried 10 x 75mm HE shells.

     7.  ROUTE OUT:
 
         1st flt:  From MULLINIX FIELD on course 343 deg true.  Ground speed 190, alt 9,300 ft, V formation.

         2nd flt:  From MULLINIX FIELD on course 353 deg true for 366 nautical miles at ground speed 185 knots.  Thence on 315 deg true to approach at ground speed 200 knots, alt 10,300 ft, V formation.

         3rd flt:  From MULLINIX FIELD on course 350 deg true for 110 min, thence 330 deg true for 25 min, IAS 190 knots.  Climged on course to 11,300 ft, V formation.

         4th flt:  From MULLINIX FIELD on course 355 deg true to MILLE.  Thence on 340 deg true to approach.  IAS 185, alt [1]0,000 ft, V formation.

     8.  APPROACH: 

         1st flt:  Target first sighted at 082137Z from 25 miles.  Course 270 deg true, IAS 215, alt 11,000 ft, V formation.

         2nd flt:  Target first sighted at 082206Z from 20 miles.  Course 315 deg true, IAS 180, alt 10,300 ft, V formation.

         3rd flt:  Target first sighted at 082310Z from 15 miles.  Course 350 deg true, IAS 190, alt 11,300 ft, V formation.

         4th flt:  Target first sighted at 090108Z from 15 miles.  Course 360 deg true, IAS 190, alt 9,800 ft, V formation.

     9.  ATTACK:

         1st flt:  Course 10 deg true, IAS 200, alt 9,800 ft, V formation.  Bombs away at 082147Z.  All bombs from this flt hit in target area between eastern turning circlels.

         2nd flt:  Course 280 deg true, IAS 210, alt 9,500 ft, V formation.  Bombs away at 082212Z.  All bombs from this flt hit in target area SE of SW turning circle, probably damages buildings and gun positions.

         3rd flt:  Course 110 deg true, IAS 190, alt 11,300 ft, V formation.  Bombs away at 082320Z.  Bombs aimed to hit near shore and walk-over on gun positions on shore line.  4 bombs from this flr hit NW tip of TAROA.  8 bombs hit in water.

         4th flt:  Course 70 deg true, IAS 210, alt 9,800 ft, V formation.  Bombs away at 090113Z.  10 bombs from this flt hit W and S of NW turning circle in N part of target area, 2 bombs on beach.

     10.  INTERCEPTION:  None.

     11.  TARGETS OF OPPORTUINTY:  None.

     12.  BOMBS JETTISIONED:  None.

     13.  AA FIRE:

          1st and 3rd flts:  None.

          2nd flt:  Firs fired on just before releasing bombs.  3 bursts from guns, accurate for alt, but leading and slightly to the right.  Meager and accurate.

          4th flt:  First fired on just before bombs away.  4 black bursts, 1 in front, 3 behind and 300 ft higher, from guns, meager and accurate.

     14.  ENEMY AIRCRAFT LOSSES:  None.

     15.  OUR LOSSES:  None.

     16.  OUR DAMAGE:  None.

     17.  OUR CASUALTIES:  None.

     18.  OBSERVATIONS:

          1st flt:  Airfield inoperational.

          2nd flt:  None.

          3rd flt:  Runways inoperational.  Radio station on first Island NW TAROA appears badly damaged and trees around it are blown away.

          4th flt:  Runways inoperational.  2 coastal guns ovserved on Island about 4 miles SW TAROA.

     19.  ROUTE BACK: 

          1st flt:  On course 180 deg true, IAS 190 gradual descent.  V formation.

          2nd flt:  On course 151 deg true to MAJURO, IAS 200 knots, gradual descent, V formation.

          3rd flt:  On course 180 deg true to MAJURO, IAS 200 knots, gradual descent, V formation.

          4th flt:  On course 170 deg true to MAJURO, IAS 200, gradual descent, V formation.

     20.  WEATHER:

1st flt:  On route out:  .6 cover Cu, wind 80 deg at 14 knots.
          At target:     .8 cove, strato Cu, wind 70 deg at 20[0] knots.
          Route back:    Same a route out. 

2nd flt:  On route out:  .5 to .8 cover, Cu, wind 80 deg at 18 knots,
                         visibility 30 miles.
          At target:     .6 cover, Cu, wind and visibility same.
          Route back:    .5 Cu.

3rd flt:  On route out:  .7 to .9 cover, stratus.
          At target:     .2 to .3 cover.
          Route back     .5 to .6 cover.

4th flt:  On route out:  .8 to .9 cover to ARNO, .4 to AUR.
          At target:     Clear.

MISSION # M-143

     1.  MISSION:  Daylight bombardment mission by 11 B-25 A/P from the 396th Bombardment Sq (M), 41st Bomb Gp (M), to attack ammunition dumps, buried stores and buildings EMIDJ; and warehouses, buildings, installations on JABOR, JALUIT ATOLL, staging from MAJURO in 3 flts of 3 A/Ps and 1 flt of 2 A/Ps.

     2.  TARGETS ATTACKED: 

         1st flt over target (ammunition dumps and stores, EMIDJ) at 090112Z  from 9,800 ft.

         2nd flt over target (installations, JABOR) at 090133Z from 9,500 ft.

         3rd flt over target (buildings, S part of EMIDJ) at 090232 from 10,000 ft.

         4th flt over target (warehouses and installations N end of JABOR) at 090430Z from 9,000 ft.

     3.  TAKE OFF:  All A/Ps took off from MAJURO as follows:

         1st flt from 090018Z to 090022Z.

         2nd flt from 090046Z to 090047Z.

         3rd flt from 090140Z to 090145Z.
