MISSION REPORT
Missions 207A & 207B

Mission 207A

     1.  MISSION: Daylight bombardment mission to attack gun positions and barracks area on North end of EMIDJ; gun positions and buildings on S E side of EMIDJ; and radio station, barracks and installations S W side of EMIDJ, JALUIT by 12 B-25 A/P’s from the 396th Bombardment Squadron (M), 41 Bombardment Group (M) in 4 flights.

 

     2.  TARGETS ATTACKED: 2nd flight over target, gun positions and barracks North end of EMIDJ at 022224Z from 10,500 ft.  4th flight over target, gun positions and buildings S E end of Island at 022344Z from 9,700 ft.

 

     3.  TAKE OFF:  12 B-25 A/Ps took off from MULLINIX FIELD

         1st Flight from 021908Z to 021910Z.

         2nd Flight from 022001Z to 022004Z.

         3rd Flight from 022059Z to 022101Z.

         4th Flight from 022128Z to 022130Z.

         4th Flight:

     5.  AIRCRAFT ABORTIVE:  6 A/P’s abortive.  The first and third flights turned back due to bad weather and A/P 294 jettisoned bombs after leaving target.

 

     6.  BOMB LOAD:  1st, 2nd, and 4th flights each carried 12 x 100 lb GP bombs with instantaneous nose and .025 sec fuse.  3rd flight all A/P’s carried 2 x 1000 lb SAP bombs with .025 sec fuse.

 

     7.  ROUTE OUT: 2nd Flight:  From MULLINIX FIELD on course 325 true to approach.  IAS 175 knots.  Climbed to 9,000 ft then descended at MAKIN to 300 ft. and flew under weather to 70  miles from target.  Climbed to 11,000 ft at target.  Modified V formation to right.

         4th Flight:  From MULLINIX FIELD on course 320 deg true to approach.  Ground speed 180 knots.  Flew at 500 ft for 1 hour 41 minutes on instruments then climbed out.

 

     8. APPROACH:  2nd Flight:  Target first sighted at 022219Z from 15 miles.  Course 260 deg true, IAS 210, altitude 11,000 ft.  Modified V formation to right.

        4th Flight:  Target first sighted at 022328Z from 55 miles.  Course 260 deg true, IAS 210, altitude 10,300 ft.  V formation.

 

     9.  ATTACK:  2nd Flight attacked on course 155 deg true, IAS 200 mph, Alt. 10,500 ft. Modified V formation to right.  Bombs away at 022225Z.  All 48 bombs from this flight hit North end of EMIDJ and south end of TINIET, destroying connecting bridge, a large building in N barracks area, and probably destroying a gun position.  A small fire was started in N barracks area, with black smoke visible 10 miles at 10,000 ft.

         4th flight attacked on course 360 deg true, IAS 205 mph, alt. 9,700 ft.  V formation.  Bombs away at 022344Z.  4 bombs hit near shore East of barracks area.  20 bombs hit in the water.

         A/P 294 bombs not released.  Invervelometer switch being in “train” for release by pilot rather than “selective”.  Personnel error.

 

     10.  INTERCEPTION:  None.

 

     11.  BOMBS JETTISONED:  A/P 294 jettisoned 12 x 100 lb bombs 10 miles from target.  Oil pressure out on right engine.  Bombs jettisoned for safety in landing.

 

     12.  TARGETS OF OPPORTUNITY:  None.

 

     13.  AA FIRE:  2nd flight first fired on during bomb run by guns, meager and inaccurate.

          4th Flight on AA.

 

     14.  ENEMY AIRCRAFT LOSSES:  None.

 

     15.  OUR LOSSES:  None.

 

     16.  OUR DAMAGE:  None.

 

     17.  OUR CASUALTIES:  None.

 

     18.  OBSERVATIONS:  Fire and smoke from JABOR ISLAND visible 30 miles at 9,000 ft.

 

     19.  ROUTE BACK:  2nd Flight on course 62 deg true to MAJURO, IAS 185, gradual descent from 10,000 ft.  Modified V formation to right.

          4th Flight: on course 58 deg true to MAJURO, IAS 180, descending from 10,000 ft.  V formation.

 

     20.  LANDING: At MULLINIX FIELD:

          1st Flight from 030055Z to 030056Z.

          3rd Flight from 022323Z to 022330Z.

          At MAJURO:

          2nd Flight from 022320Z to 022330Z.

          4th Flight from 030030Z to 030035Z.

 

     21.  WEATHER:

          2nd Flight:  Route out:  .4 to .8 to MAKIN, tops 8,000 to 9,000 ft.  Front to 80 miles from JALUIT, tops 15,000 Ft.  Ceiling 500 ft.

                       At Target:  Clear.  .7 surrounding target area.

                       Route Back:  .5 to .7 cover scattered Cu. to MAJURO.

          4th Flight:  Route out:  Heavy rains, solid overcast, ceiling 500 ft., to 5 deg N latitude.  Overcast broken from there on.  Undercast of stratus at 7,000 ft. to JALUIT.

                       At Target:  Clear.  .2 to .4 scattered low Cu, in vicinity.

                       Route Back:  Scattered Cu. from 2,000 to 7,000 ft. about .5 cover.  Thick haze.

 

     22.  PHOTOS:  13 Photos, 100% coverage.

 

     23.  MALFUNCTIONS:  None.

 

     24.  DISTANCE FLOWN:  2nd Flight – 550 Statute miles.

                           4th Flight – 540 Statute miles.

 

Mission No. 207B

 

     1.  MISSION:  Daylight bombardment mission to attack AA gun positions and installations N tip.  Concrete ammunition dumps and gun positions South of runway intersection of TAROA ISLAND, by 7 B-25 A/P’s from the 396th Bombardment Squadron (M), 41st Bombardment Group (M) staging from MAJURO in two flights.

 

     2.  TARGETS ATTACKED:  2nd flight over target at 030205Z from 10,500 ft.  4th flight over target at 030251Z from 9,500 ft.

 

     3.  TAKE OFF: 7 B-25 A/P’s took off from MAJURO in tow flights as follows:

         2nd flight took off from 030120Z to 030124Z.

         4th flight took off from 030215Z to 030218Z.

     7.  ROUTE OUT:  From MAJURO:

         2nd Flight on course 360 deg true to MALOELAP, IAS 175, climbing to 11,000 ft., modified V formation to right.

         4th Flight on course 350 deg true to MALOELAP, IAS 165, climbing to 10,000 ft., V formation.

 

     8.  APPROACH:  2nd Flight, target first sighted at 030112Z from 25 miles.  Approach course 270 deg true, IAS 210, altitude 11,000 ft.  Modified V formation.

         4th Flight, target sighted at 030235 from 40 miles.  Course 360 deg true, IAS 215, altitude 9,500 ft.  V formation.

 

     9.  ATTACK:  2nd Flight:  On course 225 deg true, IAS 200 mph, alt. 10,500 ft.  Modified V formation to right.  Bombs away at 030205Z.  Bombs hit in a close pattern from the edge of the water on and across AA gun positions on N tip of the island.  9 bombs target area probably destroying AA guns, and 7 bombs hit on reef and in the water.

         4th Flight:  On course 270 deg true. IAS 200, alt. 9,500 ft.  V formation.  Bombs away at 030215Z.  All bombs from this flight hit South of runway intersection and on S leg of runway A.

 

     10.  INTERCEPTION:  None.

 

     11.  BOMBS JETTISONED:  None.

 

     12.  TARGETS OF OPPORTUNITY:  None.

 

     13.  AA FIRE:  2nd Flight first fired on as bombs were released by guns from N tip of TAROA, meager but friendly accurate.  This firing ceased after bombs hit in gun positions.  Slight turn and change of altitude employed as evasive tactics.

          4th Flight first fired on shortly before releasing bombs from guns N E of S E turning circle.  1 burst within formation, 3 bursts widely separated.  Meager and inaccurate.  Change of direction, speed, and alt. employed as evasive tactics.

 

     14.  ENEMY AIRCRAFT LOSSES:  None.

 

     15.  OUR LOSSES:  None.

 

     16.  OUR DAMAGE:  A/P 950, small hole through leading edge of left wing.

 

     17.  OUR CASUALTIES:  None.

 

     18.  OBSERVATIONS:  Both flights reported runways inoperational.

 

     19.  ROUTE BACK:  2nd Flight on course 175 deg true to MAJURO, IAS 190, gradual descent from 10,000 ft.  Modified V formation to right.

          4th Flight on course 162 deg true to MAJURO, IAS 190, descending from 10,000.  V formation.

 

     20.  LANDING:  All A/P landed at MAJURO as follows:

          2nd Flight from 030247Z to 030250Z

          4th Flight from 030330Z to 030333Z

 

     21.  WEATHER:  2nd Flight:

          Route Out:  .3 to .5 scattered Cu tops 9,000 ft.

          At Target:  Clear over target, .5 scatter Cu. tops 9,000 ft in area.

          Route Back:  .3 to .5 cover, tops, 9,000 ft.

 

     22.  PHOTOS:  13 photos, 100% cover.

 

     23.  MALFUNCTIONS:  None.
